Girls on film: Marilyn Monroe in The Misfits

Monroe is famed for her silver screen beauty, she embodied the glamour associated with early Hollywood by demonstrating extravagant fashions and flawless beauty. In The Misfits (1961), however, Monroe sheds some of that Hollywood shine to play a sensitive southern belle.

In her final completed film before her death in 1962, she wore traditional southern hairstyles with sensitivity. Her twee gold blonde bob is neatly styled but it has an ease to it with its relaxed waves, and it even looks great when pulled into messy pigtails.

Combined with delicate make-up Marilyn’s look in The Misfits is entirely enviable.

If you can’t get enough of Marilyn’s timeless look then perhaps you might want to see it on the big screen. Luckily enough the BFI are putting on a retrospective of the late actress’ best films across June. You’ll be able to see The Misfits for yourself along with 14 other delightful Marilyn themed screenings.
